Referral Marketing: 3 Referral Email Examples to Help Grow Your Business Quickly

Business Growth Hacks, Marketing
Referral Marketing Email Templates - David Lee-Schneider ConsultingDavid Lee-Schneider

Referral marketing is one of the most powerful ways to grow your business. With a little creativity and these handy referral marketing email templates, you can create an effective referral campaign that will help you connect with new customers and grow your business faster, without having to spend a cent on advertising.

Why Use Referral Marketing?

When first starting out in business, it can be challenging to get the traction you need to become profitable, especially if you are starting from scratch with no email list or social media following.

Referral marketing is a great way to connect with new customers by tapping into other businesses’ existing customer base. Partnering with just one or two businesses can already have a huge impact on your sales. Moreover, referral marketing is completely free – and of done right, everybody wins!

However, to make our referral campaign a success, there 3 elements we need to consider.

What are The 3 Main Components of a Referral Marketing Email Campaign?

Anyone can ask another business owner to refer them to their customers. But to see results, we need to keep in mind the following.

1. Clearly defined target audience

Like with any type of marketing campaign, understanding who your target market is and where to find them is absolutely crucial. The more clarity we have about who our ideal customer is, the easier it will be to find businesses to partner with for your referral campaign.

2. A compelling offer

If we ask other businesses to send out an email to their database, we better have a compelling offer, or otherwise our efforts will quickly go to waste.

3. What’s in it for them?

This may be the most important element when looking for referral partners. Put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself why they should partner with you. How does it help them?

If another business agrees to send a referral email to their list to introduce your products and services, it’s usually for 1 of 3 reasons:

  • It genuinely helps their customers without being in conflict with their own offering
  • It positions their business in a good light
  • There is a financial or other incentive for them

The more compelling you can make it for them, the easier it will be to convince them to refer you.

You also want to make the process as easy as possible for them. That’s where these referral email templates come in very handy.

How Do You Create a Referral Marketing Campaign?

Once you have identified potential referral partners and they have agreed to sending a referral email to their list, it’s time to write the actual email. To make it easy for them, you want to write this email for them, but keep in mind that it should be written from their perspective and addressed at their customers.

Referral Marketing Email Examples

These are actual referral emails I have used with clients to help them grow their email list by building strategic partnerships with aligned businesses.

Subject Line Ideas For a Referral Marketing Email

The subject line of a referral marketing email should be catchy and targeted at your ideal target market. You may also include keywords that are relevant to your product or service. Here are some examples you could use:

  • Here’s a gift from our friends at [business name]
  • Something special for [first name]
  • [first name], you won’t want to miss this!
  • We thought you might like this, [first name]
  • This one’s for you
  • You’ll love this (and it’s free!)

Referral Marketing Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not including an offer
  • Partnering with businesses whose audience isn’t aligned with yours
  • Partnering with businesses who don’t have an email list
  • Making it all about your business

With that in mind, referral email marketing is one of the fastest, most powerful ways to grow your business, even if you’re just starting out. And it becomes even more powerful, when used in combination with some clever marketing automation tools and an evergreen marketing mindset.
